Advantages of Embedded Standalone DVRs

Surveillance for home, office or general security is often dependent on the efficient recording of activities. As such, majority of surveillance equipment make use of recorders in order to save any images that may be used as evidence later. For general surveillance, there are basically two types of recorders currently used: the embedded or standalone DVRs and the PC-based DVRs. Although it’s an older technology, the embedded standalone DVR remains popular for most surveillance needs not just for its ease of use but also for its efficiency.

What is an embedded standalone DVR?
DVR stands for digital video recorder. The embedded standalone DVR, as its name implies, is a complete unit designed to receive signals and record these signals onto a chip. The DVR itself is contained inside a single case, made up of a hard drive, CPU, a memory chip and an operating system. A basic embedded standalone DVR usually only includes a single hard drive for recording, although many models come equipped with one or two other hard drives to allow for longer recording times.

Advantages of embedded standalone DVRs
Older models of embedded standalone DVRs were incapable of providing users with access via the Internet, a feature that PC-based DVRs were equipped with. This greatly limited the extent of use of this type of DVR, especially if multiple locations were involved. These days, though, standalone DVRs can be used in several locations, handling feeds coming from several units of security camera systems. This meant that embedded standalone DVRs could allow users to remotely monitor and track activities from several different locations at once.

Another advantage of the embedded standalone DVR is that the operating system being used is not accessible to non-users, even if the system uses the Internet. This is an important feature in terms of security and safety because an operating system that is closed to other users helps prevent the threat of hacking attempts, worms, spyware and viruses. This also means that there is no need to obtain new security patches from the operating system manufacturer on a regular basis.

Settings can also be manipulated remotely, allowing the user or administrator complete control of the whole system. In terms of image quality, newer models of embedded standalone DVRs that have come out recently can provide high resolution recording.

The embedded standalone DVR is also generally easier to operate compared to the PC-based recorder and in terms of long-term use, relatively cheaper.

Who needs an embedded standalone DVR?
Embedded standalone DVRs are often the choice of business and corporate establishments for their surveillance needs. Because of its capability to allow remote monitoring, it makes the issue of security for an establishment easier to resolve.

For home security, the embedded standalone DVR is an excellent choice for larger houses or for homeowners who own several different properties that they wish to monitor.

The Ins And Outs Of An 8 Channel Stand Alone DVR

Even though an 8 channel stand alone DVR is not really recommended in surveillance systems, it is still a brilliant and interesting piece of hardware. These machines are particularly useful if you want to set up a small entertainment network of your favorite movies and television shows. Here are some points to illustrate its usefulness and worth.

Portability

An 8 channel stand alone DVR is an all-in-one multi-channel device that lets you record your favorite movies and television shows. Everything that you need comes in one small black box. A powerful computer processor controls all its features and functionalities, while a single motherboard holds all the circuits, chips, hard drives, and optical disk drives together. Stand alone machines look like desktop tower computers due to its sleek and compact design. Although some machines are bigger than others, you can easily place them in your entertainment cabinets with your other multi-media devices.

No Worries About System Specs

Unlike PC-based digital video recorders, you do not have to worry about hardware requirements and other specifications for your 8 channel stand alone DVR to work. You do not have to fret over software compatibility and other operating system issues. You don’t have to install software, like in PC-based DVRs, because the applications are permanently embedded into the hardware of stand alone machines. Therefore, software upgrades and modifications are impossible. If you do not take good care of your machine, any system error might end up with you carrying the thing to a service center to have it fixed. This is probably its biggest downside. Nevertheless, connecting video inputs to an 8 channel stand alone DVR is easy. Enter some system configurations, and you will be recording and feeding programs in no time.

No Need For Experts

With a user manual and a little patience, you can easily set up a network with your stand alone DVR without any expert help. If you are able to work with your machine, you will get a good understanding of how it works. The knowledge that you will get about your machine will really be helpful when you have to do some minor troubleshooting. On the other hand, PC-based digital video recorders in DVR surveillance systems are more complicated and may require advanced skills to run and operate. In fact, what makes these systems so expensive is that you may have to seek assistance from an expert. You may also have to shell out cash for other equipment such as DVR security cameras, wires, cables, and batteries.

An 8 channel stand alone DVR is a machine that your friends will really drool over once they see it. It is a fine addition to your home entertainment system. The large amounts of storage in these machines will let you record and save hours and hours of movies and programs. By means of its multi-channel functionality, your friends can enjoy what you are watching, too. With stand alone machines such as this, your family will never miss the programs that they love.

Setting Up Your Own DVR Security Systems

Not only can you use a digital video recorder (DVR) to record your favorite television shows, you can use these devices to juice up your home security system. Read on to learn more about DVR security systems.

The Upside

Most DVRs have massive amounts of disk space to store up to a hundred hours of video. This is basically why you should use one for your home security system. If your family is on vacation and no one is left at home, you can record up to a month’s worth of surveillance video with a DVR! With a system this powerful, your home is secure all the time.

Good Camera Placement

DVR security systems work best when surveillance cameras are placed in areas where valuables and money are kept, in your kids’ room, and other places that may attract intruders. Put cameras over doors, hallways, and windows. The rule of thumb is to always mount your cameras high enough on corners to have a wider field of vision. Also, wires that connect the cameras together should be kept hidden. Your security system will be exposed to intruders if they see wires and cables all over the place.

Get A DVR Machine

With the cameras in place, hook them up to you personal computer and DVR. The best DVR security systems use wireless technology, but this is not really necessary for home use. Your DVR should be able to store large chunks of surveillance videos and burn them into DVDs. It should have security features such as motion detection and colored bar screens. When your budget is tight, you can always buy a DVR card to use your computer to keep surveillance videos. Install the DVR card inside your computer if you know how. But to be sure, you can ask an expert to do it for you. Using a DVR card is a cost-effective way to store hours and hours of video. However, DVR cards are not recommended for security systems with more than 4 channels.

Digital Video Recording Software

Efficient DVR security systems are always run with software that is dependable and easy to use. It is a good practice to install all the drivers and software that come with your DVR card or device to achieve full functionality. Do not mix and match your devices with flimsy third party software. Your DVR might become very unstable if you do so, basically ruining the entire system. If you feel that a particular piece of software is better than the one that goes with the package, ask an expert for functionality and compatibility issues. It may not be able to start your DVR, so better be safe than sorry.

You can find all kinds of DVRs in the market, each one unique in terms of form and purpose. You should not be too quick in spending your money over a device that is not appropriate for your needs. Remember, the best DVR security systems are efficient, not outlandish or excessive.

DVR Hidden Camera: Prosecuting Criminals For Decades

Self-defense is a part of everyday life and for any and all environments, too. It is when you believe that only bad neighborhoods are dangerous that you can get into the most danger. Because today crime doesn’t stay in certain areas, in some instances it comes to you. Out in the countryside – that is to say, in the middle of nowhere – it is probably equally as dangerous, because any help would only be available in a police department that is miles away. This is why equipping your home a with DVR Hidden Camera or yourself with a taser is a good idea.

Guns are certainly not the right answer as they pose a threat to the owner as well as innocent bystanders. With a Hidden Camera DVR you can catch criminals in the act without any harm. This way you will also have proof in case of a trial. Furthermore guns need to be licensed by the state or city and may be difficult to purchase due to the high costs. They also need to be properly maintained and safely stored, and require practice to retain the necessary expertise in their use. With a DVR Hidden Camera set up is very simple and there is not maintenance required. Point it wherever you like and the camera does the rest.

If you believe arming yourself is still necessary then tasers are available for personal security. These are electric weapons that temporarily stun would-be criminals so you s can flee for help. They are user-friendly and powerful enough to stop the most determined of assailants. These devices can knock a criminal out for upwards of thirty minutes allowing you to stay at the scene of a crime, if necessary and wait for the police.

Though advanced instruction is never a bad idea in any in task, both a taser and DVR Hidden camera require little prior understanding. They are completely functional tools that require little to no servicing and are the complete package, when together, for self defense. While taser regulations differ depending on the city, county or state a Hidden Camera is always legal to keep an eye on your home or property.

So long as these tools are used for safety, protection and surveillance, there is never a reason to second guess such a purchase. While tasers can keep you safe the DVR Hidden Camera can be the proof you need to send a criminal to prison.

Selecting the right Digital Video Recorder for your CCTV application

Next to choosing the right camera for your surveillance needs, the selection of an appropriate recording device is the second most important decision you will make. There are a lot of different options to choose from, each with their own pros and cons.

The easiest decision to make is that of the recording media. VCR type recorders that use VHS tapes to make time lapse videos are pretty much a thing of the past. They have all but been replaced with Digital Video Recorders (DVR) that store recorded video in a digital format onto a fixed storage device.

Digital Video Recorders are available as stand alone devices, or can be purchased as a card that is added to an existing PC.

Stand alone DVR devices are about the size of a DVD player and do not require additional hardware to function (other than a monitor). Be aware that some models do not include a hard drive – you must install one inside the unit yourself. If you do not want to be bothered with doing this, purchase a model with a hard drive already installed.

Stand alone DVR’s are very convenient and reliable. You simply plug your cameras into the device and configure your recording preferences and before you know it, your are done! No fuss, no mess. Some models even feature a network port that allows you to access and view your cameras from the Internet. Others have built-in USB ports and DVD burners to export video clips.

Video capture cards are used to add DVR capabilities to an existing PC. They tend to be less expensive than a dedicated DVR, but they require quite a bit of legwork to get up and running. The first issue to deal with is compatibility. Some cards only work with specific video card chipsets and operating systems – therefore it is important to be very diligent when looking over the system requirements before making your purchase. Video capture cards usually include the necessary software to monitor your cameras.

The second issue with video capture cards is the nature of their installations – your computer must stay powered on in order for the software to function, and the installation is highly dependent upon the reliability of the computer operating system. It is for these reasons that I prefer the ?install it and forget about it? nature of stand alone Digital Video Recorders.

Is is also important to take into account how many cameras you need to monitor and record. DVR prices start at about $100 for a basic video capture card and can reach up into the thousands of dollars. The more cameras you need to record, the more the unit will cost. For most residential and small business needs, a 4 or 8 camera DVR will do just fine. Expect to pay about $100 per camera port for a good stand alone DVR.

The next thing you want to verify is the recording resolution and frame rate. It is important that your DVR have the capability of recording at the same or higher resolution than your camera feeds. If you cameras transmit 480 lines of resolution, make sure your DVR can handle it. Digital video recorders now use several different video compression standards to store video. Try to get a unit that supports either H.264 or MPEG4 – they will allow you to store more video on your hard drive at higher resolutions and frame rates.

As far as storage is concerned, the bigger the hard drive, the more footage you can store. Combining motion activated recording with today’s larger hard drives should allow you to store months of footage on a 4 or 8 camera setup.

Finally, you will want to look into features such as the availability of motion based recording, scheduled recording and remote access to both real time feeds and stored video. These features are now pretty standard on newer models. Also make sure that the unit makes it easy to search and export video clips.
